What advice do you have for those looking for love in Boise?

For those looking for love in Boise, I advise that you look in places where you least expect it. Branch out and get out of your comfort zone! Maybe attend a class that you haven’t been to before.

Love in the BOI: Nikki & Graham

The Night Nikki & Graham Met

Imagine backpacking through Europe & eventually meeting your future husband. Meet Nikki and Graham.

Nikki’s Mini Story:

I was 24 had a great job, lived down town. Done with dating. And thought right! If I’m going to see the world I need to do it now before I have roots. I sold my stuff, and my flat. Bought a ticket to London and traveled by train for 7 weeks, sleeping on couch’s hostels, hotels, and streets. I saw the U.K., France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and made my way back to London and up to Scotland
For my 25th birthday. the girl I was crashing with had a going away party me at the end of my stay and invited a few friends. She said we needed to pick up a friend from the train station, there he was 6’2 Scotsman. Awesome fashion smaller amazing ! I played it cool. We all hung out all night. And he kissed me before I had to go, We swapped details, and said to keep in touch. I touch a 5 hour train back to London. And no sooner I got there, he said come back. I had one of those movie moments ( if I don’t go I’ll regret it for the rest of my life) and so I went. He took me all over, had a few adventures. And I had to fly back to Boise.

Two days after I got home he sent me a message “ I shouldn’t have let you leave” and he was on the next flight, he had NEVER been to America. I took him all over Boise, Salt Lake, Reno, Las Vegas. And that was it….

6 weeks from the day we met, we were married ️ that was nearly 8 years ago. We lived in Scotland for a while. But Boise is home. We have 2 kids both with Scottish names Ewan Graham, and Harper Caroline. Which we take traveling. Hawaii, Iceland, Disneyland and Scotland

Love in the BOI: Vanessa & Brody

Meet Brody and Vanessa Wright. This is their Boise love story told by Vanessa.

Vanessa & Brody Wright

How They Met:

I was living in Pocatello at the time. My friend wanted to leave town to celebrate her birthday so we decided to head to Boise for the weekend! Brody and I met downtown boise off 6th and main, in the middle of the street! We stopped on that corner to exchange numbers, and later met up the next day! That following night, He showed me around Boise and I fell in love with the atmosphere even more.

We have been inseparable ever since. After 4 months into our relationship and long distance, I finally took the step to move to Boise to pursue our going relationship. A year later, we got engaged, and a year after that, we got married . We now have a beautiful daughter, Moana who is 6 months. We will be together for 4 years this coming March, 2 year wedding anniversary in June ❤️🤗

Meet the Wrights

Describe Your First Date:

He offered to come visit me in Pocatello for our first actual date. We had breakfast at a place called “Butterburrs” and I was pretty shy! I refused to look him straight in the eye during our date because he was so intimidating! He thought I wasn’t interested in him! We attempted a second date the following weekend. Second date kicked off much better! And he continued to come down to see me every weekend for 4 months until I moved. Been together ever since ❤️

What Advice Do You Have For Those Looking for Love in Boise?

My advice for those looking for love in Boise is HAVE FUN, live a little and don’t have such high standards!!!! I honestly did not plan on being in a relationship so soon when I met my husband. But that’s what life does to you! People show up at the right place and the right time!

vanessa 3
Beautiful smiles from a lovely couple

Before, I used to be so picky, but being picky isn’t always a good thing! Once I realized what was actually realistic in a man/relationship, the more fun it became to meeting people!! I never thought I’d meet my husband in the middle of the street! I took that as a sign and opportunity to see what would happen next!

So have fun, take chances, and live life with a positive outlook!! Always!

What we enjoy doing as a couple:

We LOVE sushi! You’ll catch us at your local IOU Sushi, or outdoors paddleboarding, or hiking with our German shepherd named Kuma and our daughter Moana around the valley! We also enjoy The Village at Meridian, and Bowling at Big Al’s with family and friends!

Love in the BOI: Sladja & Devin

To celebrate the month of love, I asked local couples to share their stories of how they fell in love in the City of Trees.

Meet Sladja & Devin. Here’s their BOI Love Story:

IMG_4195 (1)

How did you and Devin meet?

We met at a friends’ wedding; my friend Catalina and his friend Gabe were getting married. He approached me on the dance floor and complimented my outfit. We talked the remainder of the evening and exchanged phone numbers; he asked first of course.

Describe Your First Date.

Our first date was very simple and casual, my style. We went out to dinner to Matador, a local Mexican joint. We realized later that both of our favorite food was Mexican. We barely ate but instead talked for 2 hours getting to know one another. After dinner, we went to his place and watched a movie. We were inseparable from that moment on.

What advice do you have for those looking for love in Boise?

Don’t be so picky, but don’t settle either. What I mean by this is lose your “type” or the idea of a “perfect” person because it will limit who you meet based on your own judgement but don’t allow your character to be questioned based upon what you think the other person will like. Believe your worth because there’s only one of you and every person deserves love. People often, myself included, confuse lonely and alone. If you feel lonely, you’re better off being alone. I also truly believe you have to love yourself first before you can love someone else and allow them to love you back.

Where is your favorite place to go (or thing to do) together as a couple?

We love to go anywhere outdoors. We love to hike and/or backpack with our pups through the wilderness; one of our favorite spots is Stanley, ID. It’s one of our favorite ways to unwind and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of work and social media stress. For us, it’s the best way to spend quality time together and go back to basics.

Dating in the BOI: 7 Fun 1st Date Ideas

Thanks to the ladies in my Girls Night Boise group, I have a creative list of first-date ideas when dating in Boise. Even if it’s not your first date, here are some date night ideas you can impress your lover with:

  1. Grab a Scooter, get a picnic basket, and zip around Boise.

Scooters are fun, and they add this layer of exhilaration any couple would enjoy. You can either take the picnic to a romantic spot in Boise (Julia Davis Park, Ann Morrison Park, or Camel Back’s Park), or end your scooter adventure at a romantic restaurant.

  1. Be a big kid at Wahooz

This is my personal favorite because the dates with my then-boyfriends started off carefree and casual. Think about how fun it’ll be to tap into your inner kid again. No pressure of highly romantic dates. This is a personal preference, but I’m a big fan of fun and casual dates. Why?

  • Be slightly competitive, fun & flirty while playing mini gold
  • Jump in a go-kart and race each other & see who wins
  • Have fun as you play laser tag
  • Get to know each other over a slice of pizza
  • Take some of those classic photo booth pictures

Plus – it’s my way of seeing if a guy is hyper competitive and if whether he can be silly & relaxed. Not take himself too seriously. It’s also an excuse for me to wear a cute top, some boyfriend cut jeans, and throw on my Converses.

  1. Get Your PAC MAN on at SpaceBar Arcade

Talk about bringing it back, in an entertaining and fun way. Who doesn’t old school arcade games?  SpaceBar Arcade is this cool spot located below Dharma Sushi and Thai on Capitol Blvd in Downtown Boise. You know you’re in the right spot when you see the line of old school arcade machines for your perusing.  Head to the bar to grab some drinks. You’ll notice an 80s movie playing one these 3 small TVs in the corner. And it’s a VHS that’s playing (my younger audience may need to google what a VHS is.) If you want to tape into your Nintendo skills, grab a seat on the couch with your date and start playing!

I’ve been to the SpaceBar Arcade to hang out, but never on a date. This is on my list.

  1. Tap into you artist at Ceramica

Calling all Demi Moores and Patrick Swayzes (Ghost movie reference). Well, maybe not so much like that scene, but you can get together and paint your own pottery piece. It allows both of you to tap into your creative side and see how each other creates. You can even give each other your masterpieces once they are ready.

  1. Hiking & Grab Healthy Smoothie Afterwards

With plenty of hiking trails, you have many opportunities to have your first date be an active one. You can see beautiful Boise while getting to know each other. After burning off some calories, you can grab some healthy cuisine at places like Fresh Café Boise.

  1. Capital City Market + 8th Street Brunch

Since I’ve experienced the Capital City Market for the first time last weekend, I can definitely see it being an ideal place for a first date. You can take your time exploring all the various vendor tables, buy each other fun gifts, and take your time strolling as you talk & connect. It’s low key enough to where you don’t have that high  pressure to keep chatting. Plus, you can be flirty in a less-than-obvious way. Maybe that’s me talking because I’m not the best with all of that flirty stuff. After taking your time walking around, you can then head over to one of the restaurants on 8th Street: Juniper, Eureka, Wild Root Café, Bittercreek Alehouse, and Red Feather Lounge. You can even venture off 8th Street and head over to Bacon or St. Lawrence Gridiron.

  1. Get Your Laugh on at Liquid Laughs

You can’t beat having a good laugh in at your first date. It’s an ideal way to break the ice between 2 people. Why not head over to Liquid Laughs for your first date? I haven’t been to liquid laughs, but I know it’s a place I’m adding to my date night bucket list. You can grab dinner beforehand at Solid, or Bardenay, or P.F. Chang. You can walk over to Liquid Laughs, sit next to each other, and enjoy being entertained. Afterwards, you can maybe walk around downtown and keep the conversation going.

This is my PART I of my 1ST date ideas. Big special thanks to my girls night boise special ladies for their dating ideas and input: Taylor, Ashley,  and Crystal! Stay tuned for plenty more ideas.

Dating in the BOI: Mr. Emerald City

App used: Tinder

1st Date: 13th Street Pub and Grill

Status: No 2nd Date

I’ve been to Seattle once, and I haven’t met anyone originally from there. [ Insert Mr. Emerald City.]

This weather encourages me to explore these dating apps even more. Not because I’m desperate for a date (umm, no), but because I’m entertaining my boredom due to this thing called cabin fever.

Around the start of the (first) snowmageddon, I went on Tinder to kill my boredom vibes. I ended up matching with Mr. Emerald City.

  • Tall? Yes. Really tall, actually
  • Smart? On paper, yes.
  • Good bio? Sure. It let me know he likes yoga and dancing

After matching,  I got the standard introductory message I hope you’re having a lovely evening.

Hmm, OK. Let me pause here for a sec.

This sweet and oh-so-nice message is the honey. There may be moments where a man means to send a genuine messages with adjectives like lovely and wonderful. I’m learning that not all honey is sweet.

After the usual back and forth banter, we exchanged numbers. What I appreciate about Mr. Emerald City was his eagerness to talk & initiate meeting– unlike those time wasters I’ve interacted with in the past.

Our schedules allowed for us to meet the following Monday after matching. The place chosen was 13th Street Pub and Grill.

Yes, a new place to feature for my blog!  I thought.

He told me it’s his usual spot and a place where he frequents.

Note to self.

Monday morning comes around, and he surprised me with a friendly hope you’re having a good morning text message. Hmm — that’s different. Haven’t received one of this type of messages in a long time. In years past, it’s usually been from someone I’m seriously getting to know.

I’ll admit — I do enjoy receiving sweet nothings like that: seeing how my day is going; good morning texts. Hmm, will my dating in the BOI take a turn for the better? Only time will tell.

It’s 8:30pm and time for our date. I get to 13th Street a little late, and walked around looking for Mr. Emerald City. He texted me earlier saying how he’s in the corner sitting at a table. The Pub isn’t the largest pub, and you’ll notice someone sitting alone. After walking around and coming up short, I eventually asked the waitress if someone was waiting alone.

The waitress looks at me somewhat perplexed, and answers with no, no one is sitting alone.

Dammit, was I stood up?

I grabbed my phone to confirm he said 13th Street Pub. I mean, I’d look like a fool if we were to meet someplace else. After confirming, I sent him a text hey I’m here.

No more than 5 seconds later, I looked down and saw an incoming call from Mr. Emerald City. I picked up and he apologized profusely and said he got confused where we were to meet and how his day was so crazy.

Hmm, I bet he was worried I’d leave. He should of been.

Like he told me on the phone, he made it to 13th Street Pub in 5 minutes. I decided to wait for him near the fire pit. If you haven’t been to 13th Street Pub, it has this beautiful fire pit in the patio. It’s perfect for this winter weather.

While waiting for Mr. Emerald City, I snapped some photos (of course!), and checked my ‘gram. It was a way for me to keep distracted from those first date jitters. Believe it or not, I still get those!

With what seemed like forever, I was greeted by this extremely tall man with a Colgate smile. I couldn’t help but to say to myself damn he is tall.

If you couldn’t tell from my other previous posts, height is a weakness of mine.

Mr. Emerald City  was wearing a beanie (a piece of clothing I never really cared for because , well, who the hell wears them in Florida?!), a fitted jacket, and some adidas. In addition to his height,  I also noticed his ridiculously green and bright eyes.

I tried my BEST to refrain from being shy. I tend to get that way initially on a 1st date. I eventually get more comfortable as time goes on.

Once he sat down, we ordered drinks &  eased into our conversation.  Mr. Emerald City was engaged, made me laugh, and asked me questions giving me the impression he wanted to get to know me.

After 2 hours passed and the bill was paid, Mr. Emerald City said hey, I’m having a good time & I don’t want the evening to end; want to listen to music at  my place?.

Let me pause — again.

This isn’t my first time at the dating rodeo.   I’m not in college where I go to my crush’s dorm room, watch a movie, and accidentally fall asleep. I’m talking to someone I matched with on Tinder. What do you think “let’s go to my place” means?

What do you think I did?

I’ll keep you all in suspense.

I’ll say this. All that sweet talking ended. I haven’t heard from him since.

Does it matter? I’m not sure. Boise is small, and I know I’ll see him again. Especially when he shared some of his interested and how they overlap with mine.

As I’m writing this blog, I can’t help but to laugh. Laughing because these dating experiences are moments which highlight my single life here in the BOI. Sometimes, you’ll experience this whole bait & switch effect. The person will attract you with some sweetness (this goes both ways, male and female) and  willing  to show some genuine interest. But it may not last after the 1st date, depending on how it ends.

No word from him. I was attracted to him and all, but something was missing. Maybe it was that lackluster kiss towards the end of the night. I don’t know. But I’m confident there’ll be a time where I’ll run into him. And when I do, it’ll be a quick hello (with confidence) and a slow goodbye. No time for small talk.
